Definition of ALARP
As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) refers to the standard of care expected in the maritime industry to reduce risk to an acceptable level. This is not the same as zero risk, but rather as low as reasonably practicable given the available resources and knowledge.
For example, in a paragraph discussing safety measures on a cargo ship, the following statement could be used:
The ship’s engine room is equipped with an ALARP safety system designed to prevent engine room flooding. This system includes automatic watertight doors, water level sensors, and engine room bilge pumps.
