Nautical Term: APS

Definition of APS

The Arrival Pilot Station (APS) is a navigational aid facility, typically located near the entrance of a harbor or waterway. Its primary role is to provide guidance and assistance to incoming vessels as they approach the channel and prepare for docking. This includes communicating important navigational information, such as depth, tidal conditions, and the location of other vessels or obstacles. Here’s an example of how the APS might be used in a single paragraph:

‘As the sun began to set over the harbor, the 300-foot container ship, the Seawitch, approached the Arrival Pilot Station (APS) located at the entrance of the harbor channel. The APS operator, using a VHF radio, communicated the vital navigational information to the Seawitch crew, including the depth of the channel, the tidal conditions, and the location of other vessels or obstacles in the area. With this essential guidance, the Seawitch safely entered the harbor channel and prepared to dock at the container terminal.’
