Nautical Term: ARPA

Definition of ARPA

Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) is an advanced navigational system used in maritime transportation. ARPA utilizes radar technology to automatically plot the positions of other vessels or objects on a ship’s navigational display. For instance, if a merchant ship is sailing in the North Atlantic Ocean and wants to maintain a safe distance from another vessel, the ship’s ARPA system would be used to automatically track the position of the other vessel, allowing the merchant ship to keep a safe distance from the other vessel.
