Nautical Term: Aye, aye, sir

Definition of Aye, aye, sir

The response given by a sailor to signify that they have understood and will comply with an officer’s order (I understand your command and will follow it).

For instance, the ship’s captain may issue the following order: ‘Set all sails!’ In response, the first mate might reply: ‘Aye, aye, sir! All sails will be set.’ Thus, the phrase ‘Aye, aye, sir’ is an expression of acknowledgment and obedience used in the nautical world.
