Nautical Term: Bail

Definition of Bail

Bail refers to the act of removing water from a boat. This is typically accomplished by using a bailer, which is a device with a scoop or bucket on the end, which can be used to scoop water out of the boat and then empty it over the side.

For example, if a boat has taken on water during a storm, the crew would use a bailer to remove as much water as possible from the boat. They would continue this process until the water level in the boat has returned to a safe level.
