Nautical Term: Base line

Definition of Base line

A horizontal reference line, either fore and aft (base line) or transverse (transverse baseline), used for taking vertical measurements. The base line is perpendicular to the vertical center line. For instance, in the process of hydrographic surveying, the water depth at each station is measured vertically from the base line, providing essential information for navigation and coastal management.
