Definition of Bear down

To bring the bow of one vessel closer to the side of another vessel, either when overtaking, coming up on the same course, or making ready to moor. For instance, when sailing on a large body of water, the captain of a sailing vessel might give the order, ‘Bear down and make ready to tack when you reach the windward side of that schooner!’
