Nautical Term: Bevel square

Definition of Bevel square

A bevel square is a carpenter’s tool used to create bevels at specific angles. It consists of a square body with one or more blades that can be adjusted to create a close bevel of less than 90 degrees or an open bevel of more than 90 degrees.

For instance, a shipwright might use a bevel square to create a beveled joint for a plank on a ship. By setting the bevel square’s blade to the desired angle and using it as a guide to make the corresponding angle on the plank, the shipwright can create a strong and watertight joint.
