Nautical Term: Block

Definition of Block

A block refers to a pulley or sheave, or a system of such devices, mounted in a frame. This setup is utilized to multiply power when moving objects using ropes that are run over the sheaves. Blocks are available in single, double, or triple varieties, indicating the number of sheaves they contain.

For example, imagine a sailor hauling in a heavy anchor using a rope. To make the job easier, the sailor attaches the rope to a double block and tackle system, which consists of a double block with two sheaves each, and two tackles, each with a pulley and a rope running through it. The sailor then pulls on the rope connected to the double block, which in turn pulls on the anchor. Due to the leverage provided by the double block and tackle system, the sailor is able to lift and move the heavy anchor more easily than if they were trying to do it directly.
