Nautical Term: BM
Definition of BM
./Beam, refers to the widest part of a vessel, measured perpendicularly from the waterline. For instance, when calculating the stability of a cargo ship, the load placed on each side of the beam is considered to determine the vessel’s centre of gravity and therefore its stability.
For example, a container ship with a beam of 48.8 meters will have a larger width than a similar vessel with a beam of 45.7 meters. The larger beam of the former vessel will affect its stability, requiring more careful loading and consideration of its centre of gravity.
