Nautical Term: Boss

Definition of Boss

The term boss has two distinct meanings. Firstly, it refers to the central hub or the part of a propeller to which blades are attached. Secondly, it denotes the aperture or opening in the stern frame where the propeller shaft enters.

For instance, during a routine inspection of a ship’s propulsion system, the engineer might notice that the boss of the propeller is worn out and needs replacement. In the same context, if there is a leak in the stern frame, the engineer may locate the source of the leak by inspecting the boss, the aperture through which the propeller shaft enters the stern frame.
