Nautical Term: Bow door

Definition of Bow door

Bow door refers to a watertight, hinged door located at the foremost end of a Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel. This type of door allows for the efficient loading and unloading of vehicles and cargo directly onto or off the deck of the vessel.

For example, during the loading process of a Ro-Ro vessel, trucks filled with cargo drive up a ramp onto the vessel’s deck. Once the trucks reach the foremost end of the deck, the bow door is opened, allowing the trucks to drive through the door and exit the vessel. The process is reversed during the unloading process.
