Definition of BSS
BSS, or Bridge Strategic Suite, refers to a collection of advanced navigational and communication systems installed on a ship’s bridge. These systems allow for real-time monitoring and analysis of critical data such as weather conditions, navigational charts, and traffic information. With this information readily available, bridge officers can make informed decisions and take appropriate actions to ensure the safe and efficient navigation of their vessel.
For example, during a transatlantic voyage, the bridge team of a container ship relies heavily on their BSS systems. The ship’s weather radar system alerts the bridge team of an approaching storm. The bridge team then uses their ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) to plan the safest and most efficient route to avoid the storm. Throughout the voyage, the bridge team continues to use their BSS systems to ensure the safe and efficient navigation of their vessel.
