Nautical Term: Button
Definition of Button
A button refers to a round, cast or fabricated deck item. Buttons are commonly used to facilitate the threading of cables between vessels when they are made-up or moored side by side.
For instance, during a refueling operation at sea, the receiving vessel’s master might authorize the crew to make-up or moor the fuel supply vessel alongside.
Once the vessels are made-up or moored alongside, the fuel transfer process can commence. To ensure a seamless cable transfer, the deck crew members from both vessels can utilize buttons to help thread the necessary cables between the vessels.
