Nautical Term: Capstan, steam
Definition of Capstan, steam
A steam capstan is a vertical drum or barrel operated by a steam engine to handle heavy anchor chains, hawsers, and other heavy marine equipment.
The steam engine is usually non-reversing, and it transmits its power to the capstan shaft through a worm and worm sheel.
The drum is fitted with pawls to prevent overhauling under the strain of the hawser or chain when the power is shut off.
When the engine is disconnected, the capstan can be operated by hand through the medium of capstan bars.
For example, when a ship is anchoring in rough seas, the crew may need to secure the anchor chain to the ship’s hawse pipe using the steam capstan. By working together to turn the capstan bars, the crew can efficiently and securely handle the heavy anchor chain and ensure the safety of the ship and its crew.
