Nautical Term: Cargo hatch
Definition of Cargo hatch
A cargo hatch is a large opening in the deck of a ship that facilitates the loading and unloading of cargo. For instance, during the unloading process of a container ship, cargo hatch covers are removed to expose the hatch opening. Then, loading cranes or forklifts are employed to move the cargo from the ship’s hold and into the cargo holding area on the dock. Once all the cargo has been successfully unloaded from the ship, the cargo hatch is closed and sealed to ensure the safe and secure transport of goods by sea.
