Nautical Term: Center line bulkhead
Definition of Center line bulkhead
The Center Line Bulkhead is a transverse bulkhead erected on the center line or in the same plane as the keel. It serves as a division between two compartments, ensuring their separation in case of flooding.
As a reference line, the Center Line Bulkhead may also have a transverse bulkhead scribed with a line, indicating the center of the ship. This line can be used as a reference point during loading, stowage, and general ship operations.
For example, during the loading process of a cargo ship, the crew may use the reference line on the Center Line Bulkhead to ensure that the cargo is evenly distributed between the port and starboard sides of the ship. This helps maintain the ship’s stability and reduces the risk of flooding or capsizing.
