Nautical Term: Cowl

Definition of Cowl

A cowl is defined as a hood-shaped covering that sits atop a ventilator pipe. This design allows for effective ventilation while also shielding the pipe and its contents from external elements such as rain or wind.

For example, The sails of the ship were filled with the wind as the crew adjusted the rigging. Meanwhile, the engine room below deck was kept cool by the effective ventilation system. The hood-shaped cowl atop the ventilator pipe ensured that fresh air could enter the engine room while also preventing hot air and exhaust gases from escaping.
