Nautical Term: Custom broker

Definition of Custom broker

A custom broker is a licensed person or firm, authorized by the customs authority of their respective countries when necessary, to facilitate the process of importing goods into a country.

For instance, an importer located in New York intends to import electronic devices from China. The importer hires a custom broker based in Hong Kong to handle the customs clearance process. The custom broker ensures that all necessary documentation is prepared and submitted to the Chinese customs authorities. Once the goods have been cleared through customs, the custom broker arranges for the delivery of the electronic devices to the importer in New York.
