Nautical Term: Davits
Definition of Davits
Davits refer to a pair of cranes or radial arms, mounted on the gunwale of a ship. Suspended from these arms are the lifeboats. This system allows for easy and efficient launching and retrieval of the lifeboats in case of emergency.
For instance, during a storm at sea, the crew of a cargo ship may need to launch the lifeboats to ensure the safety of the crew. With the help of the Davit system, the lifeboats can be launched efficiently and effectively, allowing the crew to focus on managing the crisis at hand.
