Definition of Derrick

A complex lifting system, comprised of a kingpost, an adjustable topping lift boom, and all the required rigging for hoisting substantial weights, cargo, and other heavy items.

For example: The cargo ship’s derrick was used to hoist heavy containers from the ship’s hold and transport them to the dockside for unloading.
