Nautical Term: Distress signal

Definition of Distress signal

A distress signal is a specific call for assistance, which can be communicated through various means such as flag displays, sounds, lights, or radio signals.

For example, when a ship is in danger and needs immediate assistance, it may fly the international distress flag, which consists of a square red flag with a white diagonal stripe. This clear and unmistakable signal alerts other ships, planes, or coastal stations within the vicinity, who can then render assistance to the distressed vessel.
