Nautical Term: Dog
Definition of Dog
A ‘dog’ is a type of hold fast, which is a short metal rod or bar, fashioned to form a clamp or clip. This nautical tool is used for securing watertight doors, manholes, or pieces of work in place, preventing them from shifting or coming loose during rough seas or heavy usage.
For example: During the storm, the captain ordered the crew to secure all watertight doors. One of the doors, located in the cargo hold, had come loose during the turbulent seas. The crew member assigned to secure that door, quickly grabbed a ‘dog’ from the toolbox, and used it to clip the door shut, ensuring it was securely fastened and watertight once again.
