Definition of EBL
An Electronic Range Line (EBL) is a modern navigation aid used primarily in aviation and maritime industries. The EBL is an electronic version of the traditional range line, which is a physical line used for measuring the angle between a ship or aircraft and a known reference line. The EBL functions by transmitting a continuous electronic signal, which can be received and decoded by ships or aircraft in the vicinity.
For instance, a maritime pilot may use an EBL to determine the exact angle and position of a large container ship as it approaches the pilot station. This critical navigational information enables the pilot to safely guide the ship through the busy port waters.
