Nautical Term: EPIRB
Definition of EPIRB
Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons, also known as EPIRBs, are essential navigation devices used in distress situations at sea. These automatic radio beacons transmit a distress signal, including the exact position of the vessel, to rescue agencies via the COSPAS-SARSAT system. For instance, if a sailor’s boat capsizes, leaving them stranded at sea, they can activate the EPIRB on their boat. The EPIRB will then transmit a distress signal with the exact location of the sailor’s boat, allowing rescue agencies to quickly and efficiently locate and assist the sailor in distress.
