Nautical Term: ETOPS
Definition of ETOPS
The Emergency Towing-off Pennant System, commonly referred to as ETOPS, is a set of guidelines and procedures established by international maritime organizations for enabling commercial airline operations over water for extended periods, beyond the reach of normal shoreline-based emergency towing services.
Example: During a transatlantic flight, one of the engines on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner failed. The pilots, utilizing the Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards (ETOPS), were able to safely continue the flight to their destination airport, where they were able to make an emergency landing and disembark all passengers safely.
