Definition of Eye plate
An eye plate is a type of fitting that plays a crucial role in mooring arrangements. Specifically designed to withstand the constant stress and tension exerted by the mooring lines, an eye plate is typically fabricated from robust materials such as bronze or stainless steel. For instance, in the context of a small recreational vessel, the mooring arrangement might consist of a heavy anchor connected to the vessel via a lengthy chain and a mooring line, which is then secured to the vessel’s mooring bitts. In this setup, the mooring line is threaded through an eye plate, which is in turn affixed to a solid structure, such as a mooring piling or a marine concrete block. This configuration allows the vessel to be securely held in place during adverse weather conditions, while also enabling the vessel to be easily maneuvered into and out of its berth.
