Nautical Term: Fall

Definition of Fall

The nautical term Fall refers to the working end of a rope or cable used in a tackle system. While it is commonly used to refer to the entire length of the rope used in a tackle, the term Fall strictly refers to the working end of the rope to which power is applied.

For example, in setting up a typical sailing boat’s tackling system, the sailor might attach the boat’s jib sail to the forestay using a tackling system consisting of various lengths of ropes and cleats. In this context, the working end of the rope used to hoist the jib sail would be referred to as the Fall of the rope.
