Definition of Fid

A ‘Fid’ is a specialized tapered wooden pin, used to facilitate the process of separating the individual strands, when splicing heavy ropes. For instance, when attempting to splice together two large, frayed ropes, a Fid would be essential in enabling the sailor to effectively and carefully separate and align the individual strands, in preparation for the complex and intricate process of actually splicing the ropes together.
