Nautical Term: Field day

Definition of Field day

A designation given to a specific day set aside for comprehensive cleaning of a ship’s exterior. This day allows the entire crew to focus on cleaning every nook and cranny of the ship, ensuring it remains in pristine condition.

For example: Despite the challenging conditions of the open sea, the crew of the S.S. Serenity remained committed to maintaining the ship in the best possible condition. To this end, they designated the upcoming Saturday as a ‘field day’. The entire crew would come together to focus on cleaning every inch of the ship’s exterior, from the weathered deck to the rusted hull. By the end of the day, the S.S. Serenity would once again shine brightly amidst the vast expanse of the open sea.
