Definition of FIOT
Free In/Out and Trimmed (FIOT) refers to a condition where a ship’s cargo is completely free to move in and out of the hold, as well as being trimmed or leveled. This is in accordance with the standards set by the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code (FIMSA Code). However, the FIOT condition includes an additional requirement: the trimming or leveling of the bulk cargoes.
For instance, consider a cargo ship carrying bags of wheat from Canada to Europe. During the voyage, the crew monitors the conditions of the cargo holds. They notice that some of the wheat bags have shifted during the voyage, which may cause instability to the ship.
To address this issue, the crew decides to trim or level the wheat bags in the cargo holds. They perform this operation using various cargo handling equipment, such as cranes, forklifts, and conveyor belts.
