Nautical Term: FOG

Definition of FOG

Fog stands for For Our Guidance. This term refers to the dense sea fog that limits the visibility and safe navigation of ships at sea.

For instance, a captain might announce over the ship’s PA system, Attention all hands, we are now entering an area of heavy fog, For Our Guidance. All lookouts are to remain at their stations, and all hands are to keep a sharp lookout for any signs of other ships or hidden rocks in the fog.
