Definition of FORCE MAJEURE

Provision in a maritime contract that relieves charterers, shippers, and receivers from liability for any failure or delay in performance, resulting from unforeseen circumstances or forces beyond their reasonable control.

Example: Despite our best efforts to ensure a timely delivery, the vessel was unfortunately delayed due to force majeure circumstances. Specifically, the cargo was held up in port due to unexpected labor strikes, which fell outside the reasonable control of our company or the shipowner.
