Nautical Term: Freeboard

Definition of Freeboard

Freeboard refers to the vertical distance between the load waterline, which marks the waterline when the ship is carrying its full load, and the upper side of the freeboard deck, which is the uppermost deck of the ship.

For example, if a cargo ship has a freeboard of 1 meter, it means that there is a 1-meter-high gap between the load waterline and the freeboard deck.
