Nautical Term: FSE
Definition of FSE
Free Surface Effect (FSE), refers to the phenomenon where the surface of a fluid is free to move, creating instabilities and potentially large hydrodynamic forces.
For instance, in the operation of a large container ship, the FSE plays a significant role when the ship maneuvers in close proximity to other vessels or to the quay, causing the free surface of the water to deform and creating potentially dangerous sloshing effects.
