Nautical Term: Girth
Definition of Girth
Girth refers to the distance measured on any frame line, from the intersection of the upper deck with the side, around the body of the vessel to the corresponding point on the opposite side. This measurement is also known as the half girth, which is taken from the center line of the keel to the upper deck beam end.
As an example, let’s consider a wooden sailing ship. When constructing the hull, the carpenter would need to take measurements of the girth to ensure that the sides of the hull are even and symmetrical. By following these measurements carefully, the carpenter would be able to construct a strong and seaworthy hull for the sailing ship.
