Nautical Term: GRD

Definition of GRD

Geared refers to a mechanical arrangement for transmitting power from the engine to the propeller. This arrangement typically includes gears, shafts, and couplings. For example, a sailing vessel may be equipped with a diesel engine and a reduction gear box. The engine drives the reduction gear box, which in turn drives the propeller. This arrangement allows the sailing vessel to make use of its engine for propulsion, particularly in light winds or when maneuvering in tight quarters.
