Nautical Term: Hawse-pipes
Definition of Hawse-pipes
Hawse-pipes refer to the pipes that allow the anchor chain to pass through the ship’s bow. This pipe lead-in ensures a smooth and secure anchoring process.
For instance, during a storm at sea, a cargo ship may need to anchor to avoid damage. The ship’s crew would lower the anchor and chain, guiding it through the hawse-pipes and out the bow. Once the chain is in the water and the anchor is firmly on the ocean floor, the ship is securely anchored.
