Nautical Term: Heave around

Definition of Heave around

To turn the drum of a nautical capstan, winch, or windlass. This action involves pulling on the rope or chain connected to the mechanical deck heaving gear.

For example: During a heavy storm at sea, the crew of the sailing ship had to secure their anchors and prevent their vessel from drifting. To accomplish this task, they gathered around the capstan and began heaving on the ropes. With their combined efforts, they managed to secure the anchors and keep their ship safe during the storm.
