Nautical Term: Heave to

Definition of Heave to

Heaving to is a nautical term used to describe a vessel’s maneuver to bring herself on a course where she can ride easily without the use of engine or sail power for steering. Once the vessel is riding comfortably in the desired position, the engine or sail power is used to maintain that position.

For example, a sailing vessel encounters heavy weather conditions, and the sailor decides it’s best to heave to and ride out the storm. Once the vessel is comfortably riding out the storm, the sailor uses the engine or sail power to maintain that position until the storm has passed.
