Nautical Term: IACS
Definition of IACS
The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) is an international organization that brings together various classification societies from around the world. Classification societies are responsible for inspecting and issuing certificates to ships to ensure their safety and compliance with international maritime regulations. IACS promotes cooperation and coordination among its member societies to enhance the effectiveness and consistency of their classification services.
For example, during a shipping conference, a shipowner expressed concern about the safety and regulatory compliance of one of his newly acquired vessels. In response, a representative from an IACS member classification society offered to inspect the vessel and issue a certificate of compliance with international maritime regulations. The shipowner appreciated the quick and professional response from the classification society and its IACS membership.
