Nautical Term: IMSBC

Definition of IMSBC

The International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargo Code, commonly known as IMSBC Code, is an international regulatory standard set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This code outlines the procedures for the loading, handling, stowage, and discharge of solid bulk cargoes to ensure the safety of maritime transportation.

For instance, a vessel carrying a cargo of coal from Australia to Europe must comply with the provisions of the IMSBC Code during loading, handling, and discharge of the cargo. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in damage to the vessel, harm to the crew, or environmental pollution.
