Nautical Term: Inducement

Definition of Inducement

Inducement refers to the act of adding a specific port of call to a vessel’s itinerary, based on the volume of cargo or other benefits that port can provide. This justifies the cost of rerouting the vessel to include that port.

For instance, a shipping company planning a voyage from Europe to Asia might consider adding a port call in the Red Sea, despite the additional cost and time, due to the high volume of cargo that can be loaded or discharged at that port.
