Definition of Innage
Innage is a measurement used in the maritime industry to quantify the amount of liquid cargo that is held within a tank. This measurement is calculated by determining the distance between the top of the cargo and the bottom of the tank. Innage is the opposite of ullage, which refers to the amount of space between the top of the cargo and the bottom of the tank that is not occupied by liquid.
For example, in the context of a cargo ship, a captain might note in his logbook that the ingauge of fuel oil in tank number three is currently measured at 7.5 meters. This information would be valuable to the captain as he plans the ship’s fuel consumption and considers the need to transfer fuel from one tank to another.
