Definition of Keel (plate)
The keel plate, also known as the lowest longitudinal strake of plating, is an essential structural component of a ship’s hull. Positioned along the bottom centreline, the keel plate provides the primary support and stability to the vessel, allowing it to effectively cut through the water.
For instance, during the construction of a large ocean-going vessel, the keel plate is carefully manufactured, shaped, and welded to the desired specifications. Once complete, the keel plate is then positioned and secured to the bottom of the hull, effectively serving as the vessel’s backbone and primary source of stability.
