Definition of Knocked down

The term ‘knocked down’ in nautical language refers to the condition of a vessel when it is caused to list, or tilt, so excessively by the wind that the vessel is unable to recover from this position.

For instance, in a story about a sailor on a stormy night, Suddenly, a violent gust of wind struck the sailor’s ship, causing it to be knocked down, and the sailor was left trembling in fear, as he watched the waves crashing over the side of the ship.
