Nautical Term: LASH
Definition of LASH
The term LASH stands for lighter aboard ship. This refers to a specially designed vessel, equipped with an overhead traveling gantry crane. This crane is used to lift specially designed barges out of the water and stow them into the cellular holds of the LASH vessel. For example, during the unloading of a container ship, the LASH vessel docks alongside and utilizes its gantry crane to lift and transfer the barges filled with containers onto the LASH vessel’s holds. Once all the barges have been transferred, the LASH vessel sails away to deliver the containers to their intended destinations.
