Nautical Term: Lashing

Definition of Lashing

Lashing is the technique of passing and securing a rope around two or more objects. This is accomplished by wrapping the rope around the objects and then securing the rope in place by creating a series of turns and hitches.

For example, when securing cargo on a ship, the containers are lashed together using ropes and various hitches. This ensures that the containers remain securely fastened together during transportation, even in rough seas.
