Nautical Term: Laying out
Definition of Laying out
Laying out refers to the process of transferring design instructions from templates created in the mold loft or taken from the ship, to various shapes, plates, or other materials used for planing, shearing, punching, bending, flanging, beveling, rolling, and other manufacturing processes.
For instance, when manufacturing a new component for a ship’s engine, the engineer would first create a template of the desired component in the mold loft. This template would then be used to transfer the design instructions to the plates, shapes, or other materials used in the manufacturing process. The process of transferring the design instructions from the templates to the manufacturing materials is referred to as laying out.
