Length between perpendiculars

Nautical Term: Length between perpendiculars

Definition of Length between perpendiculars

The Length Between Perpendiculars (LBP) is the horizontal distance between the forward-most point of the stem and the aft-most point of the sternpost. This measurement is taken at the height of the designed waterline.

For example, if a shipbuilder is constructing a new vessel and needs to determine the LBP, they would take the following steps:

1. Identify the forward-most point of the stem and mark it.
2. Identify the aft-most point of the sternpost and mark it.
3. Measure the horizontal distance between the two marks.
4. Determine the height of the designed waterline and make a mark at that height on the sternpost.
5. Take another measurement of the horizontal distance between the marks on the stem and the mark on the sternpost.
6. Record the measurement as the Length Between Perpendiculars of the vessel.
